Mel Sterland played the final thirty-six minutes of the game as he was now the Player/Manager of the Boston club, but his charges were already 5-0 down before he took the field. Gabriel Mendes was a trialist. Martin Foster had taken over at Inside Left from Steve Hodge in the thirty-first minute and United proceeded to make several substitutions as the game wore on and the score mounted. After Paul Pettinger had taken over between the posts from Mark Beeney in the fifty-first minute, there was a triple substitution in the sixty-fifth minute, when Nathan Lowndes replaced Noel Whelan at Centre Forward, Danny Jacques replaced Jamie Forrester at Outside Left and Muir replaced Martin Foster at Inside Left. Lawrence Davis took over from Phil Masinga in the seventy-fifth minute at Inside Right and three minutes later Ross was the final substitution when he replaced Kevin Sharp at Left Back.
